Tips for a Successful Media Interview

What to DO:

  1. Get to the point. Give clear, content-laden answers.
  2. Be proactive. Answer a reporter’s question but bridge, where possible, to your own key messages.
  3. Tell the truth. No fudging or exaggerating.
  4. Stick to your area of expertise. If you don’t know the answer, say so.
  5. Communicate with more than words. Sincerity, warmth and body language are powerful tools. Use them.

What NOT to do:

  1. Don’t speculate. Decline to answer "What if?" questions. Stick to the facts.
  2. Don’t repeat inflammatory language in your answers. It becomes part of your quote.
  3. Don’t use jargon or "insider" language. It can sound arrogant and you may be misunderstood.
  4. Don’t argue or lose your temper. The reporter gets the last word.
  5. Don’t go "off the record." It’s a journalistic ethic violated more than it’s observed.
